Orecchiette with Sausage and Broccoli Recipe

Traditional Italian pasta in 30 minutes! Tasteful Italian sausage, vibrant broccoli and perfectly cooked orecchiette pasta make a delicious pasta meal even picky eaters will love!

Ingredient

– 1 pound (about 450g) orecchiette pasta – 1 pound (about 450g) sweet or hot Italian sausage, casings removed – 1 bunch broccoli, broccolini, broccoli rabe, washed and trimmed – 3 cloves garlic, minced – ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (adjust to taste) – ½ cup (120ml) extra-virgin olive oil – 1 cup Grated Pecorino Romano cheese, plus more for serving – Reserved pasta water

Direction

Prepare broccoli: Boil a large pot of salted water. Blanch broccoli for 2 minutes in boiling water until nearly tender. Reserve blanched broccoli bite-sized pieces. 

Step 1

Cook Sausage: Heat olive oil in a large skillet on medium. While cooking, break up the sausage with a wooden spoon. Cook for 6 minutes until browned and done.

Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes to the skillet. Saute for 1-2 minutes until garlic is fragrant, scraping pan bottom for flavour from brown bits.

Add broccoli to sausage mixture in skillet. Cook for 2-3 minutes to blend flavours. To cook orecchiette, cook it in boiling water as instructed on the package until al dente. Reserve ½ cup of pasta water. 

Step 4

Mix pasta and sauce: Add cooked orecchiette and pasta water to the skillet, tossing, then add cheese and toss to coat pasta in sausage and broccoli rabe mixture. Serve hot with extra grated Pecorino Romano cheese.
