Italian Sausage Meatballs Recipe

Italian Sausage Meatballs Recipe (In Sauce)—easy, hearty and reminiscent of nonna's cooking. The tender sausage meatballs in a simple tomato sauce melt in your mouth!

Ingredient

– 1 pound of Italian sausage – 1 cup stale bread cut into cube – ½ cup water or milk – ½ cup finely grated Pecorino Romano cheese or Parmigiano Reggiano (Parmesan cheese) – 1 egg, beaten – 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped – 1 clove garlic, mined – 1 teaspoon salt – ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper – 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil – ½ medium yellow onion, finely chopped – 28 ounces of canned crushed tomatoe – 5 leaves of fresh basil

Direction

Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper to store the meatballs. Add milk and bread cubes to a small bowl. Take a few minutes to soak. 

Step 1

Crumble sausages into a medium bowl after peeling them. Crumble sausage and add bread mixture, cheese, egg, salt, pepper, garlic and parsley. Mix well with a fork or wooden spoon.

Use a small cookie scoop or spoon to scoop about 1 ½ tablespoons of the meatball mixture. Grease hands with olive oil. Make small, even sausage balls. Place on baking sheet, wrap in plastic, and set aside.

Heat olive oil in a large skillet or heavy-bottomed pot on medium-high. Add onion and cook for 5 minutes to soften. Add crushed tomatoes. Mix well.

Step 4

Put the meatballs in the tomato sauce gently. Cook for a few minutes and flip the meatballs to coat with sauce. Lower heat to simmer. Cover with a slightly ajar lid to release steam.

Step 5

Cook 25-30 minutes. Prevent sauce drying by checking regularly. If it shrinks too much, add hot water. Keep the meatballs from sticking to the pan. Add fresh basil in the last 5 minutes; cook. Serve with pasta or crusty bread.
